Mental evaluation ordered for Puna attempted murder suspect

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – An elderly man accused of trying to kill his 76-year-old wife on the Big Island has been ordered to undergo a mental evaluation.
Lowell Pofahl was indicted with attempted murder after the 77-year-old allegedly bludgeoned his wife with a shotgun at their home in Nanawale Estates on Nov. 22.
Police say Pofahl called 911 admitting to the alleged attack which left his wife with a fractured skull, brain bleed, a concussion and a partial thumb amputation.
Pofahl’s wife was transported to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu where she was last listed in stable condition.
A judge reduced Pofahl’s bail from from nearly $1.7 million to $1 million on Nov. 29 over the objections of prosecutors.
Pofahl is due back in court Feb. 21 when the results from the mental examination are expected to be revealed.
