ELEPHANT AND CASTLE SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
From the days of Alexander the Great until  the abolition of the elephant gun teams a
few  years ago, the elephant has been a prominent  feature in Eastern warfare. The
Crusaders brought back the knowledge of the elephant with its howdah full of fighting
men, and that is the origin of the familiar elephant and castle of heraldry. The fact that
various families adopted it as their crest, and that it was the crest of the Cutlers' Livery
Company, accounts for its familiarity as a public-house sign. The arms shewn are those
Of the town of Coventry, although it is not easy to guess what may be the connection
between the town and its emblem.
